Why Is a Refrigerant Leak a Big Deal?

We may not be in the hottest time of the year just yet, but temperatures outside are certainly on the rise. So too is the humidity level in the air.

We may not be in the hottest time of the year just yet, but temperatures outside are certainly on the rise. So too is the humidity level in the air. For those reasons, it really is vital that your air conditioning system is able to function precisely as intended. If your system has a refrigerant leak, no matter how tiny that leak may be, there is just no way in which you can hope to cool your home successfully. If you suspect that you have a refrigerant leak in your air conditioning system, you need to schedule professional air conditioning repairs in Boca Raton, FL immediately.

What Does Refrigerant Do?

The refrigerant in your air conditioning system acts as the heat transfer fluid for that system. It expands and absorbs heat from the air in your home during the summer season, and it is then cycled outside to your outdoor unit. There, it condenses, and the heat in the refrigerant is vented to the air outside. It is this process that allows you to cool your home during the hottest time of the year, and a refrigerant leak means that you are not going to be able to do so as effectively as possible. If enough refrigerant leaks out of your system, that system may break down entirely, potentially incurring serious damages.

Signs of a Refrigerant Leak

You should have your air conditioner tuned up every year, at which time the refrigerant levels will be checked. However, you should also know some common signs that your refrigerant is leaking, just in case. That way, you aren't waiting for an annual service to have the problem brought to light. You may hear a hissing sound coming from the AC cabinet, as refrigerant escapes the pressurized system. You may also notice that there is ice forming on the system, either on the refrigerant lines themselves, or on the evaporator coil. This can happen because there is not enough refrigerant to facilitate sufficient heat absorption. Finally, you may just notice that your AC is not cooling your home as effectively as usual, because the heat transfer process is hindered by low refrigerant levels.
