How Do Ductless Air Conditioners Work?

A ductless air conditioning system, as you've no doubt guessed, does not use air ducts in order to distribute cooled air throughout one's home. Instead, individual, wall-mounted blowers are used in order to do so. Typically, an outdoor unit will support of to four of these blowers, which are all regulated by their own independent thermostats. The indoor blowers connect to the outdoor unit via power, refrigerant, and any necessary drainage lines. These blowers act as air handlers themselves, drawing air through the system and removing heat from that air via the evaporation of refrigerant. This refrigerant then travels to the outdoor unit, and the thermal energy its gathered is simply vented outdoors.

How Does This Benefit Me?

There are a few ways in which the use of a ductless air conditioner, or a ductless mini split system, can benefit you. First of all, these systems are ideal for homes without preexisting ductwork, eliminating the need for the installation of bulky air ducts. They are also quite efficient, as there is no risk of leaking ductwork. This also helps to protect your indoor air quality. On the rare day that we actually need our heating systems in this area, ductless mini splits can also utilize heat pump technology in order to reverse their operation, doubling as home heating systems.
